Dr. Hall will prescribe whatever information, tests and consultations that are needed for each individual patient. Procedures for each patient may vary; however, the following is a general description of what may occur.

  1. Once Dr. Hall advises that you are scheduled for surgery, a hospital representative will contact you to answer your non-clinical questions about logistics and travel, and to assure that you have made travel plans. In those situations when the patient lives far away, surgery is usually scheduled far enough in advance so that a travel agent can secure discounts for them.  Your physician may order that you receive preoperative information, which will be sent to you.
  2. Patients who are traveling to Lubbock generally are required to arrive 48 hours before the scheduled surgery date. Your physician generally orders that you undergo testing, examination or consultation two days before surgery as an outpatient. You will be given specific instructions, but it usually takes place at the hospital. If you have free time, a hospital representative is available to give you a hospital tour and direct you to places in Lubbock.
  3. The day before surgery is spent with your surgeon and his staff who will examine you, discuss your test results, the surgical procedure, potential complications, and risks and benefits, provide education and answer your questions. He may request that your family or companion undergo education so they can understand and assist you. The decision as to whether you qualify for surgery based on your current medical condition is made by the physician. You may decide to not undergo surgery at any time, as well. If you are to proceed, he will advise you when to appear at the hospital.
  4. On the day of surgery you will arrive at the hospital and be prepared according to the physician's orders. The length of the surgical procedure varies. Post-operatively you may be taken to the recovery room and/or ICU.
  5. The physician and other clinicians will be ordering post-operative treatment and therapy for you. Generally, you are encouraged to move about as quickly as possible, and your physician may order exercise routines, and education or group sessions with other patients who have undergone bariatric surgery. The physician and clinicians seek to prepare you for routines and life after discharge. The length of hospitalization varies, but may be 4 - 5 days.
  6. The surgeon may request that you remain in Lubbock for a day or more after you leave the hospital so he can examine you before you travel to your home. He will order post-discharge treatment, and usually requires participation in an aftercare program through a psychologist, who will provide reports to him. He usually requires that you see your primary care physician, who will also report to him; and he will provide you with further instructions. A hospital representative is available for non-clinical questions and assistance, and may contact you after you leave, as well.
